Families still tell us: "Universities don't ask for the SAT anymore, right?" For a growing number of them, that is no longer true.
And the calendar is tight. According to College Board, the late registration deadline for the November 7, 2026 SAT is October 27. The next date is December 5, with registration until November 20 and late registration until November 24. Late registration is available worldwide, with an extra fee, and deadlines close at 11:59 p.m. U.S. Eastern time.
After December, the next SAT is March 6, 2027. For most students applying to start in fall 2027, that is too late for regular deadlines. So the decision to test, or test again, is a decision for the next few days.
Several of the most selective universities have gone back to requiring scores from everyone, international students included. These are a few examples, checked on each university's own website:
Trackers like Compass Prep list more universities that require scores again, including several Ivy League schools and some large public universities. The trend is clear, but every university is different, and some still say clearly that applying without scores will not hurt you.
For an international student there are two extra points.
Scores also unlock money. Even where admission is test-optional, merit scholarships can depend on the SAT or ACT. We explained it with the University of Alabama, where scholarship levels go by score, in our guide to merit scholarships for international students. Not having a score can mean losing aid, not just a line in the application.
A score helps a reader understand your school. An admissions officer in the U.S. may not know your school in Monterrey, Bogotá or Valencia, or how hard its grading is. A good SAT score gives them a reference they know. That is why, in our experience, a strong score usually helps an international applicant more than a domestic one.
And do not forget English. Universities often ask non-native English speakers for a separate English test. Yale, for example, asks for one from applicants who have not studied at least two years in English, and lists TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge and Duolingo as options.
If your son or daughter is applying to start in fall 2027, this is the order we would follow this week:
Reading "test-optional" as "test-blind". Optional means you choose. If you send a strong score, they will read it. If a university does not consider scores at all, it says so explicitly.
Waiting for the last date. The December SAT is the last chance for many deadlines. If something goes wrong that day, there is no plan B. That is why we prefer November when possible.
Looking only at admission, not at money. A student admitted without scores may receive less merit aid than one with a good score. Over four years the difference can be large. Our university cost breakdown shows how much a scholarship really changes the cost.
Sending scores everywhere by default. At a test-optional university, a score well below its usual range may not help. Decide university by university.
Forgetting the timeline of the whole application. Testing is one piece. If you are also deciding between Early Decision and Early Action, read our guide on Early Decision vs Early Action.
At USP we have been guiding families from Mexico, Latin America and Spain for more than 30 years, with more than 2,500 university placements and more than $200M in scholarships and university savings.
With a Scholar student, the testing plan is part of the strategy from the start: which universities require scores, which ones reward them with scholarships, what score is realistic and when to take the test so it arrives on time. We do not promise admissions or scores. We make sure no door closes because of a missed date.
If you are applying for fall 2027 and you are not sure about testing, talk to us this week, while the November and December dates are still open. If the student is younger, our Scholar program and Pre-College Pathway help plan it with time.
It depends on the university. Harvard, Yale, MIT and Stanford require the SAT or ACT from all applicants, international students included. Other universities are test-optional. Check each university's policy for your year of entry.
According to College Board, the next SAT dates are November 7 and December 5, 2026, then March 6, May 1 and June 5, 2027. Late registration for November 7 closes on October 27, and for December 5 on November 24.
For many Regular Decision deadlines it is still on time. MIT accepts tests taken by December 31 for Regular Action, and Stanford by the end of December for Regular Decision. For Early Action or Early Decision it is usually too late.
Yes for students who start in fall 2027. Princeton will require the SAT or ACT from the 2027-28 admission cycle, for students who start in fall 2028.
Harvard accepts them only in exceptional cases where a student cannot pay for or access an SAT or ACT test site. Yale lets you add AP or IB scores, but they do not replace the SAT or ACT.
Often, yes. Some universities award merit scholarships by score bands, even when admission is test-optional. The University of Alabama is one example.
